Your Say of Fly By Night

Hey you’ve watched the videos. Now let’s hear what you have to say the entries. Don’t mince your words but don’t turn the film into mince meat. To leave a comment on any particluar video, look for the Team number and you can work your pens.

Team 44 – X Parte

After their entry last year, I had high expectations of this team. Overall, the story faltered a bit under the dominance of its style and genre. It is about revenge and fighting. It is partly action-driven and partly-introspective with a rather strong inner voice.

I cant help but be pre-occupied the different killing/dying methods of the people in the film. Almost like the show-off part of the show, these killings were very entertaining indeed. Two CGI moments stood out among the rest, to slightly comic effect – the sliced head and the popped-eyeball (dont think we cant see!) Othertwise, the weapon wielding choreography was very watchable.

Team 43 – Rhapsody of X

Sometimes, when fly-by-nighting, you dont know whether to do a nice compact polished piece that can last through further screenings; or just go ALL OUT to have fun and do totally nonsensical things. This entry belongs to the polished category, not that it looked too difficult to do. But I thought the visuals are quite well done. They are simple colour pencil drawings and movement is created with a few variations (different shadings) of it.

My only grouse is they could do a little more than just Sesame Street. The structure of it was the typcial Sesame Street Words Forming exercise with a single letter. But the Louis Vuitton was quite a bright sparkling touch. And that’s for luXury.

Team 42 – Xavier

The opening shot arrested my attention. It had a pair of prowling eyes in the foreground and a girl figure walking by in the background. We follow the dubious man trail behind the girl. They pass some walkways and void decks and finally she runs out of places to escape too. This is where I could not help laughing at how ‘violently’ the girl was heaving. And at the same time, the camera zoomed in on her. I was trying to behave myself mentally but the thought of Hindi or Tamil movies kept creeping into my head on the sight of her breathing. It really had a strong rhythmic quality to it.

The film cuts to another scene and I assume the killing job is done. In the next part of the movie, the man receives another job, this time to kill somone very close to him. Point taken, so it ends somewhere here.

Team 41 – Fly Back to Me, Honey Bee

This entry has the longest title. Think it had a Korean influence as well. the first look at the actor, I had an inkling he was not local. It must be the funky hairdo (which I adore). He must be Japanese or a Jap fashion victim. I was almost right, he is actually Korean.

This is a love story between a Chinese girl and a Korean guy. The video had a lot of funky cuts, making it like a music video. The last part when they held guns was so Korean, reminding me of some of the Korean gangster films and Old Boy or Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. It had reasonable productin value as well especially its choice of locations that looked very ‘out-of-town’

Team 40 – Eliminate

Nice Superhero Costume! It is even emblazoned with gold across the front. Eliminate is a superhero action flick about a superhero who tries to eliminate all the deeds that may lead to a fine in Singapore. While the film comes up with about 4 (spitting, littering, vandalism and I forgot the last oen), I can come up with about 50. A tagline in the film says ‘The World Needs a Hero’. My mind was saying ‘Singapore Needs a Hero’. Actually, this superhero was a bit ‘siao siao’ crazy. Think it must be his over the top mannerisms. Anyway, brave attempt!

Team 38 – The Equation

I cant remember much about this one. My notes says chalkboard, use of stills and narration of a poem. I did remember the poem was quite well written. This poem overlays a simple story of a boy who gets help from a girl who rejected his advances initially.
